The BMW i4 sedan competes with electric vehicles and goes head-to-head with gas-powered M cars. Balancing performance and range, it impresses on both counts. With models like the xDrive40 and M50 offering 396 and 536 horsepower, respectively, the i4’s performance surpasses even the M3. The xDrive40 achieves an EPA range of 307 miles and boasts efficient DC-fast charging up to 200 kW. While delivering comfortable daily driving, the i4 excels in acceleration, though its advanced steering feels excessive. The hatchback trunk adds versatility for cargo, solidifying its appeal.
What’s New for 2024?
For the 2024 lineup, BMW i4 introduces the i4 xDrive40, a dynamic all-wheel-drive variant packing 396 horsepower. This latest addition features dual electric motors propelling the car to an EPA-estimated range of 307 miles on standard 18-inch wheels and around 282 miles on the optional 19-inch wheels. Besides this new trim, the i4 has minimal changes from the previous year’s model.
- ABS brakes: Automatically detect tire stoppage during intense braking and adjust pressure to maintain tire rotation, enhancing braking-turning ability.
- Stability control: Identifies exceeded handling limits, reduces engine power and applies brakes to prevent loss of vehicle control.
- Front-impact airbags: Designed for driver and passenger, deployed during frontal crashes to protect heads.
- Side impact airbags: Safeguard front seat occupants’ torsos in side collisions.
- Overhead airbags: Deploy during side crashes or rollovers to protect occupants’ heads.
- Pretensioners: Automatically tighten seatbelts during collisions to optimize seating position.
- Security system: Anticipates and detects unauthorized vehicle entry, including an ignition-disable security feature using the original manufacturer key.
Interior of BMW i4:
Step into the BMW i4’s interior and be greeted by luxury, featuring options like rose gold accents, pristine white leather seats, and elegant light wood trim. While its layout aligns with BMW’s signature design, the BMW i4 distinguishes itself with an expansive, nearly two-thirds-spanning dashboard display—an innovation shared with the all-electric iX SUV. The four-door i4 embodies a coupé-like flair with its striking rear roofline yet offers the practicality of a traditional trunk.
BMW i4 has taken the wraps off its debut electric sedan, the i4, signaling a significant stride from the i3 EV. The i4’s road debut is ahead of schedule, with an additional M Performance model in the lineup. While the full details are pending, initial specs reveal diverse configurations, around 300 miles of range, and a robust 390kW (approximately 530 horsepower) from a single motor. This echoes the concept version from last year, hinting at an 80kWh battery pack and the latest iDrive software. This marks a substantial evolution from BMW’s earlier electric ventures.
Among the trims, we favor the more powerful M50 over the eDrive35 and eDrive40 options. The M50 boasts a bold look with 19-inch wheels and a skillfully balanced suspension that handles spirited driving and city comfort. It features upgraded brakes with blue calipers for added performance. While the optional 20-inch rims enhance aesthetics and grip, they slightly reduce the M50’s range from 270 to 227 miles. Inside, vernasca leather choices, the Premium package, and extras like adaptive LED headlights and wireless charging elevate the experience. The M50 is priced at 60,000,000 PKR.

Charging and Battery Life:
The i4 lineup offers diverse driving ranges. The single-motor rear-drive eDrive40 boasts an EPA-estimated 301 miles, while the all-wheel-drive xDrive40 achieves around 307 miles on 18-inch or 282 miles on 19-inch wheels. The dual-motor M50 covers 245 miles with an 81.5-kWh battery. Rapid charging at 200 kW capacity adds 88-108 miles in 10 minutes. The entry-level eDrive35 holds a smaller 66.0 kWh battery, promising 260 miles and 180-kW charging. With a Level 2 onboard charger (up to 11 kW), the i4 fully charges in under 8 hours.
The i4’s efficiency shines in the eDrive40 with standard 18-inch wheels, securing an impressive 109 MPGe city and 108 MPGe highway by EPA standards. The larger 19-inch wheels slightly decrease these figures, and the more potent M50 model also earns a lower rating. In our testing, an i4 eDrive 40 Gran Coupe almost matched its EPA estimate, clocking 280 miles of real-world range, only two miles shy. For further efficiency insights, refer to the EPA website.
